Some couples choose to have a photographer who is local to them but who also does destination weddings in Costa Rica.

With this option however, there is ONE big pitfall. And that is the additional costs involved!

You will have to take into consideration the costs of additional airfare and if your photographer has an assistant (and most of them do) you will have to pay for the flights of the assistant as well. Plus you obviously have to pay for their accommodation, food, ground travel and living costs.

In addition to that, if the photographer is not local than he or she will have to apply for a work permit in order to be allowed to do your wedding photography.

Having said all this, there are some couples that go down this route nonetheless. It gives them peace of mind and reassurance that they’ve hired a wedding photographer that they know and trust and wouldn’t have it any other way.

Plus, you can’t really have a face to face appointment with a wedding photographer based in Costa Rica before you decide whether you’d want to hire him or her.

Luckily, the Internet has made it a bit “easier” to find local destination wedding vendors.

Some of the options that you have are:

Shorten your list to about 5 wedding photographers and try to get to know them and their work better.

Ask for references from previous couples they did the wedding photography for.

Another thing that you can do is to ask for advice and thoughts on these wedding photographers from the resort or hotel that you’ve booked yourself in.

During this “getting to know your photographer” stage, it’s also wise to discuss some important issues, such as payment methods, recourse options, etc.

A local wedding photographer will of course save you tons of money in travel costs, etc and he or she will know the area inside out and will give you the best recommendations for locations, best times of day to shoot, etc.
