Tip #1

Did you know that you can split the process of making a wedding cake and use it to your advantage? What do we mean by this?

Say you or someone you know is good at making cakes, but have no idea how to decorate them … You can make the cake yourself and then go to a local baker and they will do the decorating part for you.

Tip #2

Do you know someone who’s a recent catering graduate looking to enhance their profile or a bakery that‘s only recently been opened?

You could get lucky and strike a good deal with them. They will get their first client to show off as a satisfied customer and you will probably be charged much less for your wedding cake then if you had to have it done at an established bakery.

Do some research in your area. Are there any at-home specialty cake makers? These people often charge much less than bakeries and more established stores.

If you have catering schools in your locality, enquire with the tutors whether they would be interested in getting a real wedding cake project for their students.

This tip is especially relevant if you’re going to have a simple informal wedding.

Buy a plain white cake and glam it up with decorations yourself. You can use fresh fruit or flowers (fresh or artificial) and some ribbon.

It’s really not that hard.

If you don’t want to deal with the cake decorations on the day of your wedding, use artificial flowers because with fresh flowers you would have to ideally buy them on the day.

If you’re planning your wedding way in advance, why not take a cake making & decorating course and make the wedding cake yourself. You’ll have plenty of time to practise until your big day and the knowledge and skills you get from the course will of course last a lifetime.

Who knows … you might end up liking cake making so much that you could end up doing it full time or as a side income!

Size matters. You can save lots of money simply by choosing a smaller cake. Go for 2 tier instead of 3. Look for simple wedding cakes instead of elaborate ones.

If all else fails, fake it.

They’d simply be covered with icing.
